My husband, John, and I are instrument-rated pilots who love nothing more than flying. We got excited about trikes watching them take-off and land at last year’s Sun ‘n Fun in Florida. Then we saw the cover article in G.A. News about the Revo trikes, so we looked online for a nearby dealer and found Todd and Doug at Piedmont Aerosports at Rockingham County Shiloh Airport in N.C. The next week-end we flew to see them.
Meeting these two exceptionally experienced, competent, conversant pilots was nothing less than fascinating. While waiting for a storm to pass, we sat in their hanger and talked with them for hours, asking endless questions for which they had explicitly interesting explanations. We were so impressed with their passion and enthusiasm for this sport and their specially crafted machines. Anytime you get four pilots together it’s always a lot of fun to share stories and “talk shop”, but we found these guys to be two of the friendliest, smartest pilots we’d ever had the pleasure of getting to know.
Then, after the storm passed, the real fun began when they each took one of us up into the sky together in their two trikes, so we could watch each other as we flew. It was the most enthralling flight for me ever. My first time in an open-cockpit weight-shift controlled craft, it gave me a more direct and thorough sense of the sky’s elements, as well as the maneuverability of the aircraft. From the back seat, I got a chance to actually reach over and feel the shifting motion of the bar from one side to the other in the turns. It was a pure rush! Another dimension of flying, for sure.
I think anyone who feels passionate about the experience of flying would love doing this, whether they’ve flown before or not. The simplicity of the aircraft’s design along with its amazing feeling of freedom gave me a more intuitive perspective of flying that I’d not known before. Not that I’d want to give up the comfort of our Archer III for distance flying, but certainly once in a trike is not enough. It was a whole other world of flying that I want to thank Todd and Doug for introducing to me and John.

Thank you for taking the time to talk and take me up for a intro flight. It was more than I expected. After research of many instructors I feel like Piedmont Aerosports is the place for me. I look forward to becoming a sport pilot and a part of the trike family. Thanks so much and I can’t wait to fly with you again. Your new student,

For someone who has dreamed about flying like a bird since they were a little kid, I can say there is nothing quite like the thrill of flying in a weight-shift control, open cockpit trike. It is the closest I have come to the feeling of actually flying like a bird in a powered aircraft. I would not train to fly any other type of aircraft but one like these. If you haven’t tried this yet, I highly recommend it. It will open your eyes to a new side of aviation.
On top of that, the guys at Piedmont Aerosports are top-notch pilots, easy to be with, and generally all-around great guys. I felt totally safe flying with them because I knew they had everything under control. All I had to do was sit back and enjoy the ride!
